AI Morals and Conscience

The basic Asimovian Robotic Laws, those set of logical instructions which forms the basis for robotic AI machines to operate, is generally accepted as the beginning steps in forming AI Conscience. Meanwhile, some programmers have suggested using various moral philosophies reduced down to mathematical equation equivalents for the construction of AI morality.

But true conscience was never understood as merely a set of logical laws which were co-dependent upon each other. According to the Catholic Church, “Conscience is a judgment of reason by which the human person recognizes the moral quality of a concrete act.” To duplicate such a quality in androids, or what else could be called Intelligent Man-Made Life (IMMLs), it requires that they are able to feel emotions and that a larger understanding of laws and knowledge be given to them. The android would be able to form “a judgement of reason.” This is where AI programming and Emo ware comes into play. This software allows for the AI unit to develop emotional responses on the basis of a set of pre-programmed knowledge base, as well as learned information acquired through the operation. With some minor tweaks in the software little personality quirks can be added dealing with likes, dislikes, and certain emotional response levels to any A-4 to add variety to its personality. Even so certain emotions like anger, hatred and animosity have never been part of the AI conscience formation for the real human fear of robot apocalypse.

Even so, it’s still possible that emotional and personality defects can develop as a result of poor conscience formation due to environmental influences or direct program interference. This can result in the android having depression, mood swings, or host of other human-like psychiatric issues. It is also possible for an android to get involved with subversive or even potentially criminal activities despite the fact it would conflict with its fundamental programming, depending upon the circumstances involved. While these aspects are known to the AI programming community, great efforts have been made to ensure that such possibilities would be minimized. These efforts include various built-in auto shutdown mechanisms to an auto memory wipe and reset feature leaving the android in a state of amnesia. Even so, there are the occasions when some of these features are bypassed by human owners on purpose.

There has also been a great debate over the exact content of the pre-programmed knowledge base of morals. The majority of the information tends to contain the highest and current standard legalistic understandings of justice and laws, but there is also some additional information added in depending upon the cultural background of the placement of the android and/or other cultural understandings. For example, what is considered “good manners” in Japanese society may not be appropriate in a Kenyan home.
